We were excited to join our colleagues Ortiz Leon Arquitectos at MIPIM’s 2023 first Net Zero Area. We are currently developing three projects with Ortiz Leon Arquitectos in Portugal for Retail and F&B, Office, and Hospitality. Ortiz Leon have been leaders for Architecture sustainability in Spain and obtained the first LEED Certificate and first skyscraper LEED Platinum in Europe. Their founding members are part of the Sustainable Construction Institute and Representants of the Council for Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat in Spain.
Departing from our shared professional experience in London, our goal is to develop together larger scale projects in Portugal that require a higher expertise in Sustainability Certifications and International trends.
Check out our interview on the 15th of March at MIPIM 2023 where we speak about the need to confront the issue of embodied carbon in buildings. We think Architects have a valuable role to play on tackling this issue, that will require a joined-up effort from the entire construction industry. Making the right choices when it comes to materials is vitally important, especially given that traditional building materials such as steel and concrete are so carbon intensive in their manufacture.
The projects we are developing together with Ortiz Leon in Portugal are undertaking a BREEAM Certification and we are also looking into new kinds of sustainable certifications that are coming to trend. Portugal still has a low number of achieved Building Sustainable Certifications and now faces the challenge of implementing these on to a high number of projects to comply with European Regulations. With our collaboration with Ortiz Leon we aim to achieve and deliver higher expertise in developing sustainable buildings in Portugal, from the start of our architectural concepts to construction completion.
